12 actors. 6 writers. art meets craft…
Finally, an intensive course that brings committed actors and writers together to conceive and create short films, all while being coached and mentored. At the end of each four-week program, each lab participant will leave with a hard copy of their short film in hand and the ability to use the material immediately, however they choose. The IMDb credit? Well, that’s just the icing on the cake.

The Creative Lab is an utterly unique experience in Los Angeles, and here’s what it’s all about!
The first part of this intensive course will focus on growing each lab student’s individual pursuits. Actors will dive into scene analysis with cold-reading material as well as prepared scenes written specifically for them. Writers will craft dialog-driven scenes for specific Actors and will have the chance to direct them both privately and in class. Because the class size is strictly limited, each Actor will work in every class with personalized attention and with an emphasis on scene work, while each Writer will workshop multiple scenes for specific Actors.
After applying specific acting notes and techniques through coaching, each Actor will have the opportunity to transition from scene work to film work with their Writing partner. Together they will translate the in-class growth experience into developing a short film.
By the end of the lab experience, each Actor and Writer will have a completed short film to screen for the rest of the lab. Each lab student will leave the course with a growing network of like-minded artists, new found skills and a better understanding of the creative process, as well as a copy of their short film.
The Creative Lab’s primary instructor is Abbie Cobb. She has been seen in all sorts of films and television shows, including her recurring role on the popular ABC series, Suburgatory, as well as roles on American Horror Story, NCIS: Los Angeles, Grey’s Anatomy, The Mentalist, and True Blood. She had recurring roles on 90210 and The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and recently co-starred in two feature films, Moms’ Night Out and The Umbrella Man. As a child growing up in Nebraska, she obsessively watched Shirley Temple movies and decided she’d love nothing more than to pursue acting. She performed in school plays and community theatre until she graduated, when she moved to L.A. She landed her first role on Disney’s StarStruck and continued working on shows like Pair of Kings, Good Luck Charlie, It’s Christmas!, Jonas, and Imagination Movers. She fills up her weeks with work in TV, film, and theatre, but she also spends her spare time mentoring and coaching aspiring creative professionals. Abbie is a sought-after keynote speaker at creative conferences and workshops, where she shares her book, Stuck on a Ferris Wheel, to inform and encourage actors.

Everything you will get from this workshop
COACHING FROM EXPERTS
Writers will craft characters and scenes tailored to individual Actors after first observing their work. The scripts then will be honed and workshopped before being produced into a finished short film. Actors will have the opportunity to explore material written specifically to highlight their strengths.
Writers will create multiple scenes to discover their strengths and weaknesses with the help of a trained coach, their fellow Writers, and a professional writing mentor. Each week, Actors will have stage time to explore their scene work in a safe space, with in-person attention and coaching by a professional working actor and mentor.
Each completed short film will be added to IMDb to provide an acting or writing credit for each lab participant.
A GROWING PORTFOLIO
The Creative Lab is ongoing, so jump in the lab often to add to your credit list and portfolio!
SUBMISSION TO FESTIVALS
All completed short-films will be submitted to multiple film festivals after the completion of the lab. Any resulting accolades or positive reviews are, of course, a bonus!
FOOTAGE FOR YOUR REEL
The finished films are yours to use! Lab students can instantly use their new footage for pitches, demo reels, websites, online services, and portfolios.
Space Is Limited
We accept only 12 actors and 6 writers each month. To ensure that every lab participant is ready and able to complete the necessary coursework, an audition process will be required for both writers and actors. Actors will have an in-person cold-read audition, while writers will submit a 5-10 page writing sample.
